“The strength of the armored divisions had diminished considerably. In the case of the 1. Panzer-Division, its Panzergrenadier-Regimenter had only approximately 100 men each. The 3. Panzer-Division had similar strength figures and had only five tanks left. The 23. Panzer-Division had 250 casualties yesterday, 50 of which had been caused through frostbite as a result of snowstorm. They still had 5-7 tanks. The situation on the northern front was similar. The 3. “On February 19th 1945 artillery staff of the 3rd Ukrainian Front received direction of the Artillery Branch of the Red Army and Ammunition Narkomat (Ministry) to research new brands of German tanks and SP guns destroyed in the course of defense combats in the area of Balaton Lake, Valencei Lake and Donau. Executing the order of the High command at the end of February 1945 the committee of 14 specialists was formed comprising from the representatives of artillery and tank units staffs and Ammunition Narkomat, which carried out research and marking of ninety (90) units of German armored vehicles including heavy tanks, new types of medium tanks and different brands of SP guns and personnel carriers. In total Seven (7) destroyed Tiger II, Thirty one (31) Panther, twelve (12) Pz-IV, four (4) Pz-III, thirty two (32) different brand of SP guns (StuG, Jagdpanzer etc.) and four (4) personel carriers were examined.
Out of ninety (90) examined units, eighty six (86) were destroyed by the artillery fire and four units were exploded on mines. Eighty vehicles burnt down. In total one hundred fifty two (152) cases of artillery penetrations, thirty five (35) cases of track damages, five (5) cases of gun piercing and two (2) cases of turret throwing were discovered.
Out of 152 cases of penetrations 65.8% (100 cases) accounted for side armor penetrations, 17.8% (27 cases) rear armor penetrations, 16.4% (25 cases) front armor.
Forty nine (49) penetrations accounted for AP shells of 76mm guns
Thirty (30) penetrations accounted for AP shells of 57mm guns
Fifty (50) penetrations were caused by shells of unidentified guns
Twenty (20) penetrations were caused by shells of all other types
Three (3) penetrations were caused by Panzerfaust
On top of above penetrations numerous dents and traces of different shells, bullets, which didn’t cause armor penetrations were observed."

7-9 Balaton Lake + Vienna operation - about 500 panzers and SP guns were lost
“Upon completion of the combats between 29 March-10 April 1945, the artillery staff of the 3rd Ukrainian Front in presence of representatives of NIBT Poligon, Ammunition Narkomat (ministry) and artillery branch of the Soviet Army conducted again the inspection and research of the knocked out German combat machines in the area of Balaton Lake, Elusha canal, Kapos canal, Sharviz canal, Sekesfehervar. In the course of work the committee accounted and observed nine hundred sixty eight (968) knocked-out, destroyed or abandoned tanks and SP guns as well as four hundred forty six (446) personnel carriers (SdKfz). Many vehicles previously inspected in February 1945 were also included in statistics. Four hundred machines, which were the most interesting for research had been marked and examined. All heavy tanks and new brands of SP guns underwent the special study. Out of 400 examined destroyed tanks and SP guns there were 19 units of Tiger II, 6 units of Tiger, 57 units of Panther, 37 units of Pz-IV, 9 units of Pz-III (mostly flamethrowers, Pz BeobWg III and commanders’ tanks), 140 units of SP guns (StuG, Jagdpanzer etc.), 27 tanks and SP guns of Hungarian brands and 105 units of other vehicles (Wirbelwind, Wespe, Bergepanther, Brummbar, Hummel, SdKFZ 138 Ausf. etc.).
Among the examined 400 vehicles, 389 vehicles were destroyed by the artillery fire, 11 tanks were either exploded on mines or destroyed by other means. By main statistical parameters the result of this inspection were similar to the one conducted in February 1945. The new finding was that the number of armor penetrations made by 76mm AP shells and 57mm AP shells became almost equal. The number of penetrations caused by 100-122 mm shells increased by 2.5-3.2 %. “

I have found an interesting document, which sheds light on the losses of German panzer troops in Hungary for January 1945 (Konrad I, Konrad II and Konrad III). If one compares strength of German panzer troops taking part in Konrad-I, Konrad-II and Konrad III before Konrad I began (January 1) with the equipment shortfalls as of January 28th 1945 stated in the enclosed report, he/she could have a rough idea on the panzer losses of Wehrmacht and W-SS during Budapest relief attempts in Jan. 1945.

Even if it is possible to bring these armored divisions back up to strength, at least 30% of the major equipment shortfalls and 50% of the personnel shortfalls must be made good. That means 115 Panzer IV's and assault guns, 20 light Jagdpanzer IVs, 70 Panzer V's, 18 Panzer VI's and about 200 SPW's as well as personnel replacements of 1,800 men (not counting SS divisions). These replacements must be brought in immediately just to ensure the success of Operation Konrad III, since one has to expect continuously increasing enemy resistance in the area between Budapest and the Vertes Mountains.
